![]() I wonder if the problem is something to do with third-party apps such as Default Folder or TotalFinder but why did it suddenly happen now, when neither of those have been updated recently? Also, since I had just activated "Secondary Click" in Mouse preferences, whether that's the problem. I tried to install the latest Catalina update (10.15.5) but, in the installer, I couldn't get past the Continue button as it didn't work.I attached another keyboard and mouse, but that didn't work either.I booted in Safe Mode, where the problem also existed.I didn't want to delete any more plist files because I'm not sure what unintended consequences that would have. I deleted the Library Preference files, , and files (but not any others) and rebooted.I can only close windows and tabs by pressing Cmd-W (which I do normally anyway, so not a big deal). In window tabs (and Safari tabs) I can only navigate between them by using keyboard shortcuts, not by clicking on them.Applications seem to work until I open a dialog box for example, links in Safari mostly work, although not buttons/checkboxes in pop-up dialogs.Menu items (in the Menu Bar) seem to work okay so I can open individual System Preferences although I can't configure anything in them.I can't open windows, files or applications by double-clicking on them, but I can open them via the Dock.Buttons in dialog boxes don't work, although some respond to keyboard commands such as the initial letter of the button name.I can't move windows around the desktop. One clue as to what was happening was that every time – and everywhere – I clicked the mouse, whether on an open window or on the desktop, a contextual menu would pop up, as though I had click-pressed the Control key (and no, there wasn't anything resting on the key!). I say "partially" because there were still some things I could do, but many others I couldn't. Is this a new "feature" in Catalina? Is there a way to turn it off?įinder windows not functioning properly (Catalina) All of a sudden Finder windows on my iMac became partially unresponsive. But it simply prevents the action, without explanation. If the System asked for authentication to modify the window, say to copy something into the window – as happens with a Mojave or Sierra startup drive – that would make sense. However, with a Catalina drive that is not the startup drive, I can do all these things. I can't copy anything into the window, nor delete anything to the Trash (of course I'm not deleting the 4 official folders, but something else that's been added, which can be done when the drive is not the startup drive ). If I move the edge of the window to make it narrower, the icons stay where they are so one disappears, rather than rearranging themselves so they're all still visible. If I pick one up and try to move it, a prohibited glyph appears on it, and it snaps back to where it was. They're all in a row alphabetically, and cannot be moved. I like to arrange the folders (System, Library, Applications, Users) in a custom setup, but I can't. I've run into a strange problem: The main window (root directory) of the MacOS Catalina drive is locked (cannot be modified) when it is the startup drive. I've also installed it (and the other OSes) on an external drive. There isn’t really any way around this, and we can only tell you how to get around the protection by disabling SIP.I'm just starting to work with Catalina, installed it fresh on my spare MacBook Pro (along with Sierra and Mojave on other partitions). This means that our plugins won’t load unless we can sign them with an Apple certificate, and as we aren’t Apple we don’t have that certificate. In Mojave Apple added additional signature checks for injected code. We provide updated instructions on how to install TotalFinder here and TotalSpaces2 here. Apple also provided some information here. If you want more information about SIP, see wikipedia. It is entirely your decision to modify or temporarily modify the settings. Your machine may be less secure when System Integrity Protection is not running. We know this is disappointing, and that some people will not want to do this. This means that in order to run our apps on macOS Mojave you have to keep SIP turned off. Unfortunately, with macOS 10.14 Mojave this is no longer the case - Apple have changed their verification code so that our plugin cannot possibly work with SIP turned on even if it is installed in the trusted locations that worked before. This was possible because the installation process would install our plugin components in trusted locations whilst SIP was turned off, allowing the user to turn SIP back on again after installation. ![]() In this post from 2017 we talked about how we found a way to run our apps TotalFinder and TotalSpaces2 with System Integrity Protection (SIP) turned on.
